Claude Smith was born and raised in N.Y.C. in a family of visual artists. Formal studies began at the Art Students League, and continued at the School of Visual Arts, Pratt Institute (BFA 1971), with post-graduate work at Brooklyn College and further studies in printmaking at Sonoma State University.

He has had one-man and group exhibitions in N.Y.C galleries beginning in 1968 and has had shows in Toronto, San Francisco, Europe and throughout northern California.

Claude resides and maintains a studio in Graton, CA. He is currently an artist-in-residence at KALA Art Institute in Berkeley, and was awarded an artist-in-residence at Across Oceans International Collaborations in the Arts (Toronto, Canada).
